Jazz

Jazz at DSA

Jazz technique is central to many forms of dance and our classes have a strong focus on body conditioning. As such the most prominent word our pupils think about when considering jazz is... stretching! Fun and hard work are also up there in large letters as they put their efforts into learning core technique and then applying it to a range of dance styles.

All pupils can be entered for UKADance exams in Jazz.

From September 2023 we are now offering professional training in jazz for dance school entry or teaching qualifications.

Contemporary

Contemporary dance is underpinned by both ballet and jazz technique and is being delivered to our jazz pupils for the first time in 2024!

Hip Hop

Another dance style that we explore with our jazz dancers is hip hop demonstrated here in our Dreams show.

Lyrical

Lyrical dance is a very graceful form of dance, which crucially aligns with the words as well as the ethos of the music.

P1-P3 Jazz

Our P1-3 jazz dancers study exercises and dances from the UKADance preliminary syllabi designed to develop strength, flexibility and musicality.

Junior Jazz

Junior pupils follow the early levels of the UKADance graded syllabi developing strength and flexibility and tackling a range of dance styles from musical theatre to hip hop.

Senior Jazz

Senior pupils explore the higher levles of the UKADance syllabi, up to Grade 8 and develop a broader range of dance styles including lyrical, contemporary, and very recently, the Charleston.

Lyrical Duet

From our recent Summer Breeze show - two of our marvelous pupils, Eleanor G and Christina O who were heading off to University danced a very moving lyrical duet.

Ballet & Contemporary Duet

Choreographed by the amazing Ali Y, it was Good (contemporary - Mia M) versus Bad (ballet - Gabby D) at our recent Summer Breeze as Ali worked creatively across styles.
